No trip to Las Vegas is complete without a trip to the fabulous Grand Canyon Skywalk. The glass bridge is just 120 miles away and makes a great day trip for visitors of all ages.

There are numerous types of tours that go from Vegas to the Skywalk. The top choices are:

Bus
Most affordable. Daily departures. Transportation aboard deluxe luxury bus. See Lake Mead, Hoover Dam. Comes with free hotel pick up/drop off, lunch and professional driver-guide. Perfect for groups, families and solo travelers.

Helicopter
Total thrill ride. Take-offs every day of the year. Fly at 200+ MPH over Lake Mead, Hoover Dam & Grand Canyon. Be at the West Rim in 45 minutes. Front seats can be purchased at extra cost. Upgrade to an EcoStar 130 for ultimate comfort.

Airplane
Great for the traveler with limited time. Planes seat 19 passengers, making them great for groups and families. Flight time is a just 25 minutes! Terrific aerial views of Lake Mead, Hoover Dam and the canyon. Includes free hotel shuttle service.

The Skywalk is a technological marvel. It’s a U-shaped, cantilevered bridge that’s bolted to the side of a cliff. It weighs more than 1.5 million pounds and is comprised of 46 specially formulated glass panels imported from Germany that cost $250,000 each to manufacture.

The Glass Bridge, Grand Canyon West

From a capacity standpoint, the bridge can support up to 800 people at once but only 120 are legally allowed. Not only that, but it can withstand 100 mile-per-hour, multi-directional windblasts and magnitude 8 earthquakes. These are numbers you can find comfort in, especially when you’re standing 70 feet past the edge of the rim and 4,000 feet above the bottom!

The West Rim’s summer temperatures are hot, often cracking 100 degrees in June, July, August and September. My advice to you is to dress appropriately, which means packing the following:

  • Brimmed hat
  • Lightweight, long-sleeved cotton shirt and pants
  • Sunglasses
  • Sun block
  • Lots of water

Bring spending money, too. There are no ATM’s at the West Rim, making it kind of difficult to buy that random bottle of water when you need it.

I’m also aware that many folks simply want to come out to the West Rim and see the Grand Canyon. If this is you, I strongly recommend you take this Grand Canyon West Rim Bus tour. This is the ONLY trip I know of that will let you add Skywalk tickets at the West Rim should you change your mind.
