Why Hoover Dam is a Fabulous Las Vegas Day Trip

In 1922, with the need for proper flood control and the growing need for more electricity, suggestions and initial plans where submitted to the Government for a dam project somewhere along the Colorado River near Vegas. Details for this project were few at best, but over the next 9 years more specific plans were drawn up and in 1931 construction began on the Boulder Dam which was eventually renamed the Hoover Dam.

Quick Facts

The dam took only 5 years to build but how the structure was regarded in years to come was quite unexpected. Hoover Dam became, outside of being a modern marvel of engineering, a notable and extremely popular American landmark, experienced by millions of travelers each and every year.

In addition, the dam project was extremely helpful in limiting the damage that flooding of the Colorado River had on cities and towns downstream. In addition, it provided, and still does to this day, a large chunk of electrical power for most of the Western United States

Towering more than 660 feet in height, this colossal dam has to be seen to believe. While pictures of the dam are certainly breathtaking and powerful, nothing does this structure more justice than seeing it in person. That is why, if you want to see the dam for yourself, you have quite a few options.

Pedestrians Rule!

Most recently, you could drive across the dam. In fact, millions of people every year did just that. People would make the trip from Las Vegas or even from Arizona with the sole intent of driving across Hoover Dam. This was the “free” way of seeing the dam, but it’s worth noting that because so many people did this that traffic could become gridlocked.

To reduce and minimize traffic issues, plans where put into place to create the Hoover Dam bypass. This solution would basically re-direct all traffic off the dam’s two-lane road, making it a pedestrian-only walkway. This excellent proposal got fast-tracked after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York, and was completed in fall of 2010. The official name of the bypass is the Pat Tillman-Mike O’Callaghan Memorial Bridge, and it offers terrific views of the dam.

The Friendly Skies!

Hoover Dam air tours are another option to see the Hoover Dam in all its splendor and wonder. Helicopter flights, while not the most inexpensive option, will give you a certain perspective that you simply can’t get any other way. Hoover Dam airplane tours also deliver great aerial views. The key difference between these trips is that helicopters fly at a lower altitude. Both include flying the Grand Canyon.

The last option is Hoover Dam bus tours. These are the most economical way to visit the dam. Trips leave daily and take 45 minutes to get there. Most come with a guided tour that takes you into the heart of the dam, as well as access to the observation tower, the museum and more. There’s also plenty of time to explore the surrounding area.

Do The Dam…

Hoover Dam is a must-see if you plan to visit Las Vegas. It’s a western icon that will appeals to all visitors. Discover it from the air (helicopter and airplane) or on the ground. No matter which option you pick, this is going to definitely be an experience you’ll never forget.
